About Avior
Avior is built around a simple principle: a tool should be like a hammer — solid, reliable, and always ready when you need it.
The Philosophy
We believe the best tools are the ones you can depend on. A hammer doesn't require a subscription. It doesn't stop working because a server went down. When you own it, it's yours — and it works.
That's the philosophy behind Avior. We set out to build a PDF reader that embodies this principle: robust, focused, and built to last.
Why Mac Native?
We believe the best tools are tailored for their environment. Avior is built specifically for macOS using Swift because that's where we can deliver the most refined, optimized experience.
Avior is built for macOS 15 (Sequoia) and later, with significant effort invested in optimizing it for the latest macOS 26 (Tahoe) so it takes full advantage of the newest system capabilities.
No Subscription Model
Avior is free. But more importantly, it's designed so you never have to worry about it stopping.
We can't guarantee that development will continue forever — no one can. But we've built Avior to be as robust as possible. When you "own" this tool, it should last as long as your OS version does. That's our commitment.
And when there is something new, Avior keeps itself current: signed, notarized updates are downloaded and verified in place through Check for Updates… — no accounts, no subscriptions, no manual re-downloads.
Who Avior Is For
Avior exists for a specific kind of reader:
- Academic researchers juggling dozens of papers
- Technical professionals reviewing lengthy documentation
- Power users who think in keyboard shortcuts
The original inspiration came from wanting vim's operational beauty in PDF viewing — not as an exact clone, but as a philosophical approach to efficient, keyboard-driven navigation. If you've ever wished you could navigate PDFs the way you navigate code, Avior was built for you.
What Avior Is
- A dedicated reading and navigation experience
- Keyboard-first interface inspired by vim philosophy
- Optimized for consuming large volumes of academic papers
- Fast, native, distraction-free
What Avior Is Not
- Not a PDF editor — we don't modify document content
- Not trying to replace professional editing tools
- Not bloated with features you'll never use
When you need to edit PDFs, we'll happily guide you to professional PDF editors that excel at that task.
Annotations Done Right
Avior includes professional annotation features designed specifically for readers:
- Non-destructive annotations — stored separately from your PDFs, never modifying the original document
- Designed for reading and navigation workflows
- Tools built for researchers and technical readers
We're continuously improving these features based on feedback from academic and professional users.
